Not at all weird! Churches in those parts of central or south eastern Europe that were under Ottoman threat for long periods of time developed into semi-fortresses IRL. In Croatia for example the inventory of sacral architecture includes the cinktor, which is a defense structure featuring reinforced walls, hallways and towers circling a monastery.
